10:50pm:Libyan fighters have made major progress into Sirte, the home city of toppled leader Muammar Gaddafi. National Transitional Council (NTC) forces said on Sunday they had managed to take control of Al Giza district, where a large number of pro-Gaddafi forces were based, as well as the city’s university, and Ibn Sina hospital. Al Jazeera’s Tony Birtley sent this update from the front-line in Sirte.

6:00pm: More than 18 people were killed and nearly 300 wounded on Saturday in a two days of clashes as Libya’s new regime fighters struggled to take full control of Muammar Qaddafi’s hometown of Sirte.

2:45pm: Libyan transitional government forces seized the main hospital in the city of Sirte on Sunday, a Reuters witness said, capturing more than a dozen fighters loyal to former leader Muammar Gaddafi who had used the buildings to launch mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. “We are trying to evacuate the sick and wounded,” said Salah Mustafa, a commander of the government forces. “Most of the Gaddafi militia fled, some of them have disguised themselves as doctors. We have to investigate.”

2:30pm: Germany intends to step up its assistance in Libya by offering visas for medical treatment to those wounded in the civil war. The visas are to be issued with minimal bureaucracy, according to German officials.

2:25pm: Eighteen Egyptian fishermen who were arrested in the Libyan city of Misrata after entering Libyan territorial waters have been released, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry has said.… Read More

5:23pm:  Italian oil major Eni fears its largest oilfield in Libya, known as Elephant, may be in ruins, which could dash hopes of a speedy return of Libyan supplies to global markets after months of war. The field, which pumped 130,000 barrels of oil per day before the war, was found in ruins, with its airport completely destroyed along with crucial monitors and key electronic structures.

6:30pm: Gaddafi’s former prime minister said he believed Gaddafi was still in Libya and would carry on fighting the country’s new leaders until the end. “I think Gaddafi … has not left the country. I strongly believe, based on my knowledge of him, that he is fighting with his weapons and alongside his men,” Al-Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi, who is in prison in neighbouring Tunisia, said in comments passed to Reuters by his lawyer. “He will not give up and he will not lay down his weapons until the end,” he said.

6:00pm: Hollywood star Sean Penn on Tuesday flew in to Benghazi to assess at first hand the humanitarian needs of the people of Libya.”This is my first visit to inspirational Libya. I am inspired by the Arab Spring and am here to be able to get a sense of what humanitarian aid can be delivered” to the people, Penn said after landing at Benghazi airport.

5:40pm: U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says that he believes fighting has to end in Libya, including the battle for Sirte, before the military mission there can end.Panetta says the Libyans can’t begin wrestling with problems of governance while the current level of fighting continues.Panetta says there has been a lot of progress in the Libya mission and it’s moving in the right direction.

5:25pm: NATO said it conducted 107 air sorties on Monday, 36 of them strike sorties, but it said no targets were actually hit. Strike sorties are intended to identify and engage appropriate targets, but do not necessarily deploy munitions each time. Since NATO took command of air strikes on March 31, its aircraft have conducted 24,789 sorties, including 9,240 strike sorties.

5:00pm: A Baltimore, Maryland native said he joined the uprising against Kadhafi to free Libya of the privations of the mercurial strongman’s 42-year rule

2:00pm: The military commander of Tripoli, Abdel Hakim Belhaj, a key figure in the revolution that overthrew Muammar Gaddafi, called on other militias to pull their weapons out of Tripoli, accusing them of terrorizing the city’s population.… Read More
