European countries, led by France and the United Kingdom, urged theUnited Nations to authorise a no-fly zone to protect civilians in Libya. Yet now that the no-fly zone has been established, the hard work is just beginning – and will affect the future of Nato just as much as it affects the people of Libya.
The initial phase of the allied military operation to prevent mass killings of Libyan civilians by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi‘s forces is rapidly ending. The overall decline in cruise missile strikes suggests that Libya’s surface-to-air weapons have been suppressed and the immediate threat of a massacre in Benghazi has been alleviated for the time being. March 25, 2011: The Ministry of Defence has released footage from on-board a Tornado fighter jet as it targets and destroys two tanks while on operations in Libya.
Precise and on target…. unlike what the Gaddafi regime has claimed.
Following are the military assets that could be used in action against Libya:
FRANCE which was at the forefront of the push to take action in Libya, would likely deploy Mirage and Rafale fighters from air bases near the Mediterranean towns of Marseille and Istres or from the island of Corsica.
Airborne refuelling tanker aircraft are also ready to depart from Istres.
Fighter jets could reach Libya in around an hour and a half from the south of France and in around an hour from Corsica.
France’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier is at the Mediterranean port of Toulon so would be ready to deploy fast.
