Rights Groups Oppose Ex-Libyan PM Extradition

A statement signed by 15 Tunisian and international human rights groups has opposed the plan to extradite Libya’s former prime minister back to Tripoli.

Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights were among the groups saying that Al-Baghdadi Al-Mahmoudi risked death or torture if returned to Libya.

The 70-year-old former Libyan prime minister was arrested in southern Tunisia last September trying to cross into Algeria.

Libyans want to prosecute him for crimes committed under the regime of Moammar Gadhafi.

Friday’s statement called on President Moncef Marzouki, a former rights activist himself, not to sign the extradition decision ordered by the court in the absence of guarantees for Al-Mahmoudi’s safety and a fair trial.

The ex-PM Dr. Mahmudi has been charged with several allegations made by attorney general . Some charges are related to criminal acts against 17th Feb members , others are linked with a large-scale soci-economic destruction nationwide .

Why the human right activist asking for his safety but never ever asked him to stop killing civilians when he was in power Feb-Sep 2011 ? Why Tunisians are asking Saudi to handover Ben Ali for a trail , while arguing Dr. Mahmudi should be treated with extra care and respect ? why he deserve such special treatment ?.

If Amnisty International and other human right activist groups want to see role of law and justice in the new Libya , they should not jump to unrealistic conclusions that Dr. Mahmudi will not be treated fairly at Libyan justice system . How they came to knew what is going to happen after Dr. Mahmudi face the charges ? .

what Amenisty Int’l and other human rights groups should do , is to appoint as much defense team as they can , and to offer them all means of honesty and crediability – and leave the Libyan justice system to take the lead . Sure , nobody in Libya is looking for new injuries or burns , but old injuries should be equally treated as that he feeling now .

  2. Libyan Rape Victims are waiting for Amenisty International and human right groups to give them a clear answer why the Ex-PM should not face fair trail on Libyan Land and against Libyan law , under roof of Libyan Justice system ?

Looks as if HR organizations oppose everything not exactly fitting their lofty ideals and far flung expectations. Leaves the question what they waste the money of their donors for…and smells of opportunism and hypocrisy.
